Wire on its own

No stone at all — coils, zigzags, crescents and stars, where the wire is the whole piece.

No stone to talk about, which is its own kind of relief. These are shape and light and nothing else: four flat coils across a finger, a zigzag with a long tail, a crescent, a star that hangs past the jaw. The wire is not there to hold something. It is the thing.

Hammering is most of the trick. Flattening wire unevenly means light comes off the edge in dashes instead of one hard line, so a shape glitters in a broken-up way and reads much bigger than it weighs. That is the quiet advantage of wire over metal sheet — you get the scale without the earache at the end of the night.

Brass and copper pieces will darken as you wear them, low spots going dark and high spots staying bright, so the shape gets clearer over a year rather than duller. A polish cloth brings them back if you would rather they stayed bright. On plated pieces go gentle: hard polishing takes the plating with it.
