Shell

Shell is the exception. Almost everything else in this shop gets described by colour and form rather than named, because a stone name is a claim a customer pays money against and a photograph will not support one. Shell is different — nothing else has that banding, that thickness, that particular pink-and-cream layering, because it was grown rather than formed.

It behaves differently on the bench, too. It is softer than stone and it will scratch, so a shell piece gets a frame that follows its edge instead of prongs biting into it. Keep it dry, keep it off the shower shelf, and store it flat where it cannot rub against a chain.

People reach for shell when things are loud. It is a summer material and a water one, and the pull of it is not complicated: it is the calm, washed-clean end of the colour range, and it was alive once, which some people care about and some people do not.
